During the mid-20th century noted California artist Edmond Francis Woods (1905-1990) sold paintings from his studio and gallery located at 465 2nd Ave. in Chula Vista in the San Diego area. This beautiful work, titled "South of the Border." is a desert landscape of the Baja California Peninsula. The scene may be a morning sunrise with a yellow tinge to the puffy white clouds rising above the distant mountains. This work is bold, colorful, and inviting. This is one of the most striking paintings we have seen by this artist.

Woods is listed in "Artists in California, 1786-1940”" by Edan Milton Hughes.

Original oil painting on canvas board. Hand signed by the artist at the bottom left. On the back is the business card from Woods’ studio plus a second card with information about the painting.

Very well presented in a new custom vintage gold wood frame. Stainless steel hanging wire on the back and with the original labels as they came from the artist’s studio 65 years ago. An authentic impressive work that is ready to hang.

Edmond Francis ("Ted") Woods was born in Ogden, Utah on February 18, 1905. He studied under LeConte Stewart at the University of Utah. After moving to San Diego in 1926, he studied with Maurice Braun and continued in Los Angeles at Otis and Chouinard Art Institute. He lived and worked in the San Diego area until his death in Chula Vista on July 31, 1990.

A student of Southwest Indian culture, he is known for his paintings of Navajo children and his many landscapes of Arizona, Utah, and Colorado as well as boats and harbor scenes. He was a member: La Jolla Art Association; San Diego Art Guild; Riverside Art Association; Desert Art Center; and the National City Art Association. He exhibited in California and other U.S locations.
